That combined with a cast of characters that are real and complicated and flawed and just so human, well, we just want to clutch this novel to our chest forever. Katy catches the eye of her Determined to shed her serious, shy reputation, N… More. But the rest of the characters are really surprisingly strong or at least clearly defined, so that nothing they say or do comes across as Because The Plot Decrees but rather as a natural progression of that character's personality and role. Her books are such great examples of timing, plot, and structure that I try to read them once or more a year.
